Light Painting
Quick look into the history of photographic light paintings...
This is first photo with light painting taken by Frank Gilbreth. It is black and white and really old. It was taken in 1914!
I don't really like this photo because it is not very clear. However, the quality of cameras was not good at that time - 100 years ago! Colour photography was not possible, only black and white so it is a really impressive photo! |
This photo were taken by Man Ray. It is called "Space Writing"
|
This photo were taken by Gjon Mili. It was taken in 1923. Mili used light painting technique to study the motion of dancers, musicians, and figure skaters.

These images were taken by John Hesketh. I like those images because they are very colourful. I think the photos possibly are difficult to take because there have lots of details with light.

My Experience Light Painting
If you want to do light painting photos you will need: * camera * tripod * flash (off camera) * dark background (best in a dark room like a studio) * led lights like finger lights or a mobile camera If you want to do Light Painting you have to prepare before taking pictures. Prepare the camera - the focus (faces and bodies of people need to be clear), I focus with the lights on. They need to have the LED lights ready but switched off. The lights are turned off and I click the camera and keep the shutter open with my finger ready to let go. Flash goes on quickly to have their faces clear. Then people turn their LED lights on and start painting. People can do anything they want to with the lights, for example draw the arrow through their head, angels' wings on the back of someone's body. After around 10 seconds I take my finger off and let the shutter shut. |
Harold EdgertonHarold Eugene Edgerton was a professer of electrical engineering. He was born in United States, April 6, 1903. He died in January 4, 1990 (aged 86) Harold used the strobelight to capture images that where too fast for the eye to see. When taking multi flash photographs the strobe light equipment he used could flash up 120 times a second. He used this technique to capture the images you see on the right columns.

My experience of Strobe Light
Light PaintingAmine, Busra & I have been working in a group. We decided to draw a heart with different colours and a tree with house used by led light. It went well working in a group, because I expected the photo would look dark but it is not.
I like the first picture because it was a perfect shot with us in the background. |

Photo that worked the bestWWW:
I think this photo worked the best because: * Perfect shape of heart but missed a bit on the top * Flashed at the right time to show our faces * Good frame - we are in the middle of the photo * The light looks bright and clear EBI: * We should be careful with the frame - the heart missed a bit on top * The heart shape should look perfect - we need to move the camera back a bit |
Photo that didn't workI think this photo didn't really work because:
* We weren't ready for the picture * We forgot the flash * Our led lights were not working at this time |
