Street Photography
|
"Everybody Street" is a film that shows street photography in New York. It captures (shows) the spirit of street photography what street photography is about. Photos are taken really fast, no planning and thinking, you just take a photo of what you see in the streets. Also you show life on the streets.
This film shows the few famous Street Photographers: Jill Freedman, Bruce Davidson, Joel Meyerowitz, Ricky Powell, Jeff Mermelstein, Rebecca Lepkoff and Bruce Gildell. |
Jeff Mermelstein |
Jeff Mermelstein was born in 1957 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He lives and works in New York City. He won lots of Awards: 1991- Aaron Siskind Foundation Individual Photographer's Fellowship 1999- European Publishers for Photography. |
I chose this picture because it is really interesting. I think this man is driving the bus in New York. I can see the buildings in the background through the window of the bus.
This photo is in colour and it is better than black and white I think. Because I can see the buildings in the background and the reflection of the street with cars and the hands of the photographer. This photo is calm and chaotic because the man is still and almost looking dead like a ghost and the reflection of the street is busy. The photographer is standing still in front of the bus. I can see his reflection in the bus window. The photographer used a a lens to make the picture closer to the subject put it on the background. You can see the background and it looks like the man is close in front the buildings. I would call it ' Crush Busman' because the photographer may feel like the bus driver might crush the photographer. Also the bus driver looks scared like the buildings behind him will crash or maybe something dangerous in front of him I can't see. |
What I learned about street photography from the film 'Everybody Street' |
The Street Photographers behave a bit crazy sometimes like they walk on the street fast then stop and take pictures of something interesting or funny. They have to be quick. The Street Photographers like it when people have facial expression and make gestures. The Street Photographers use the professional cameras and lenses. They are interested in people, graffitis, moments and the culture on the street. That what they like photographing on the street. The Street Photographers are at risks sometimes because they are involved in guns, drugs and people they take pictures of can get angry at them sometimes.

Composition of street photographs:lines / shapes / shadows / reflections / surfaces /
|
Mr Nicholls took these on his iPhone. Those pictures show the lines, shadows / reflection and surfaces. These pictures look creative and very colourful. They remind me of different seasons . I think they were taken at the end of Autumn.
My favourite image is a tree with leaves right in front of the students walking. I like it because there lots of shapes. Also the leaves colours are bright and beautiful. |
Photo Challenges
Photo challenge 1: Looking from above
|
Looking DownPosition yourself in a place which allows you to look down on events and objects below. You could ask a classmate to walk by beneath you or you could simply capture the patterns, lines and textures that you see.
TIP: Experiment with changing the framing of your image. Tilt the camera so that the arrangement of forms you see in the viewfinder works. Think about emphasising diagonal and cross-crossed lines for extra drama. |
Photo challenge 2: Diagonals
The idea for this challenge comes from Eric Kim's great street photography site. Street photographs are often about dramatic situations or view points. Drama is created in pictures in lots of ways but using strong diagonal lines is one technique often used by street photographers.

Photo Challenge #3- The Rule of Thirds
I used the Rule of Thirds to crop some of the photos I took on my Work Experience. Here I explain how to use Photoshop to crop the photo using the Rule of Thirds.
Photo Challenge #4 - Compare and Contrast
Similarities
Both of these photos are black and white. Those two images are similar because both of them show women walking on the street with the buildings in the background. Both of them have their bag with them. Both of them are main figures in the photo. I think both photos capture the beauty of these women and show them in a beautifully feminine way.

Differences
Both of those backgrounds are different. The first image background has cars with tall buildings. The second image background is full with people walking with their shopping bags, behind the women there are lots of buildings. One of the women on second image has a scarf on her head she also has shopping bags with her. The first image shows a woman who looks posh.
My Practice photos using The Rule of Thirds
My Street Photography // April Half TermThis is my Street Photography, I took these at the train station and park when I was travelling to Denmark Hill. I like the photo of the train because of the detail in it, for example the moving train and people around etc.
WWW- I took the pictures when the train is coming. The filter is normal and looks fine. There are also have bright colours like yellow on the train, a red machine and yellow lines on the floor. EBI- I should take more close ups because the picture might show what is inside the train. I could also take the picture straight on the train but I missed because the train moved so quick. |
